A New Era

November 7th, 2020: the sun was shining bright all over the country, people gathered to celebrate in the streets, cheers and laughter and smiles reigned free. Joseph R. Biden had just been elected as the 46th President of the United States of America.

After years of uncertainty, fear, and now the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, the United States is facing a change in the presidential administration. The new Biden-Harris Administration will be inheriting many issues. Despite a stark divide in the American public, now is the time for the government to mend the country, and allow President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to reunite the United States.

One of the first orders of business for President Biden will be controlling the COVID-19 pandemic that has taken over 500,000 lives in the United States alone. Many people believe that the grievous death toll and loss the nation is facing is in part caused by the former administration’s inability to tackle the virus head-on with early intervention. In May 2020, President Trump said the virus “is going to go away without a vaccine.” Now nearly 9 months later, President Biden will be taking the wheel to tend to the urgent crisis.. According to NPR, Biden’s first step in COVID-19 response is to “immediately work with states to open up vaccinations to more priority groups” and release the vaccine supply as it becomes available, to distribute as much of the vaccine in the U.S. as possible. With luck, the spread of the disease will slow as more vaccines are distributed in the country.

Another dangerous dilemma the world is facing is climate change. Over the last few years, the United States has made minimal efforts in combating global warming. President Biden is aware of the pressing matter and plans to ensure the U.S. achieves a 100% clean energy economy no later than 2050. The Trump Administration had previously withdrawn the country from the Paris Climate Agreement; however, President Biden will recommit the United States to the Paris Agreement in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Under Biden, the nation will be working towards a greener environment that’ll benefit us all.

The new administration should bring the country to a different level. Of course, it is impossible to know for sure what the future will bring us. We must all work together to move forward. But for now, the Biden-Harris Administration is taking the nation at least one step closer towards a new era.

A new dawn looms as we free it / For there is always light, if only we are brave enough to see it. / If only we are brave enough to be it.” Amanda Gorman, “The Hill We Climb”
