Ginny and Georgia

“Ginny and Georgia” is a unique show that features a teen daughter and her young mother who constantly move from state to state. The season starts with Ginny receiving tragic news about a family member, which results in her and her mother moving from Houston, Texas, to Wellsbury, Virginia.

The audience is able to get a closer look into Ginny and Georgia’s mother-daughter relationship, which is extremely complicated due to being so close in age, and you can see that while Ginny does love her mother, she gets very upset with her inconsistencies and empty promises. In turn, her mother gets annoyed with Ginny’s “typical teenage angst,” resulting from the frustration she feels due to the inconsistencies. Due to Georgia’s lifestyle, Ginny and her brother Austin are forced to move constantly, and they both have an extremely hard time fitting in and making friends as they never stay in one place too long. When moving into Wellsbury, Virginia, Austin has an extremely hard time adjusting and making friends because he is more of a socially anxious child, while Ginny, although also introverted, is more outspoken than her brother, specifically when she gets upset. When Ginny gets upset, she tends to go on rampages and has little to no regard towards others and their feelings, which causes her to be hurtful to others.

Although this plot may be one that seems overdone, “Ginny and Georgia” contains elements to it that further add diversity and individuality into the plot. Throughout this series, you see various flashbacks into Georgia’s past that reveal the trauma she has lived through and what caused her to be the strong woman she is today. However, the show also delves into Georgia’s criminal past that still continues presently in the show. Due to Georgia’s past and lifestyle, she tries to relay her stories and lessons onto Ginny so that Ginny won’t fall victim to what Georgia has fallen victim to. Despite this, Ginny makes a lot of the mistakes that her mother has warned her about and is forced to learn those lessons herself. As the plot continues, you can see crime and mystery elements and see meaningful discussions on serious topics such as race. Overall, the show encompasses a lot of topics and genres, which makes it incredibly versatile and a good watch for many despite the target audience most likely being teenagers or young adults. I highly recommend this show if you’re typically into tv shows about crime and teenage life.
