The 2024 MTV VMA’s took place on September 11 at 8pm EST. The VMA’s were held close to home, at the UBS Arena in Elmont, Long Island. The show presented awards to a variety of different artists and groups, ranging from rockstar Lenny Kraviz to pop’s biggest star, Taylor Swift.
The awards show, celebrating music’s biggest stars, featured impressive performances from pop hit Katy Perry, rising star Chappell Roan, and rapping sensation and legend Eminem.
The show’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award is the VMA’s version of a lifetime achievement award, and it was previously given to music legends like Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and Michael Jackson. This year it was dedicated to Katy Perry. She displayed her accomplishments and talent through her performance, where she performed iconic songs including “Dark Horse,” “California Girls,” and even brought out rapper Doechii to perform their new collab single, “I’m His, He’s Mine.” Perry’s performance was the longest of the night.
Several new artists also received their first VMA of their career. The Best New Artist award was given to upcoming pop star Chappell Roan. Tyla also won her first VMA, receiving Best Afrobeat,for her hit single “Water.”
The VMA’s also honored older legends like Eminem, featuring a performance from him and granting his new single “Houdini” Best Hip-Hop. His performance also featured “Somebody Save Me,” which he sang with Jelly Roll, the originator of the song.
The 2024 VMA’s featured talented winners of our favorite artists and performers. The high success of this year’s show raises the bar for years to come, as listeners will begin to anticipate voting for their favorite artists for next September.
