As Mepham’s newest guidance counselor, Ms. Lever is ready to take on the challenge of high school students. With 16 years of experience under her belt working with younger students, she is ready to help current seniors fight their battles with Common App and help freshmen she knew from Grand just a few months ago transition to high school.
Ms. Lever’s decision to transition from middle school counseling to the high school level was motivated by her desire to work with students over a longer period than the confined two years of middle school: “I really wanted to be part of the future planning for kids in regards to applying for colleges, SAT prep, choosing majors, etc. It has been really fun,” she says. After spending over a decade guiding students through the social challenges of middle school, she felt that high school counseling would give her the opportunity to develop deeper connections and assist students in their next big life step: preparing for their futures.
Counseling was always in Ms. Lever’s heart, even from a young age. “I was 17 when I decided I wanted to be a counselor,” she recalls. Playing field hockey in high school, she got to know her coach, who was also a guidance counselor. “I just found it really interesting,” she says. From that moment, she knew that a school environment was the right fit for her, not as a teacher, but as someone who could provide one-on-one support for students.
For Ms. Lever, the opportunity to connect with students in a private, safe space is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job. “When kids are in a safe space and having a conversation without anyone else listening or even peers around, it is a great opportunity to connect and have good conversations.” After questioning a few of her students, a similar sentiment was shared: “She’s very motivating. Always tells me that I’m doing well and pushes me forward.”
A personal turning point for Ms. Lever came when her nephew was born and later when she had her own sons, now 8 and 10 years old. “I changed how I did my job,” she reflects. “I simply do my job and treat students the way that I would hope my nephew was treated, and even more when my kids came around.” This shift gave her a more patient and compassionate approach to her work. “Navigating the world differently and being more patient is important because, at the end of the day, kids are still learning and making mistakes which are typical and normal.”
Despite the challenges of her role, Ms. Lever is not alone. She has a supportive team of administrators and fellow counselors, many of whom have years of experience. With her blend of experience and enthusiasm, Ms. Lever is sure to make a lasting impact on the Mepham community as she helps students navigate their high school journey and beyond.
