Mepham sports are very crucial to our school. They represent our pride and confidence. One of these sports is girls’ winter track. Girls’ winter track offers a great opportunity to students at Mepham to get involved in a sport and enjoy it.
This season started out great with the girls competing strongly at St. Anthony’s for the first couple league meets. Their most recent meet took place at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island. At each meet they took part in relays, short and long distance races. The strongest races at the most recent meet were the 1000, 600, 300 meters and the mile. The Mepham girl’s track team contains 27 girls who have shown to be strong and are continuing to show up to practice every day and getting the work done. Notably, Sophomore Paige Anderson has top 10 times in the conference in the 600, 1000, and 1500 meter races. Junior Sophia Philipose is currently ranked third in the triple jump in the conference at 30’2”.
According to the coach, Ms. Fonseca, “Joining the winter track team allows everyone the opportunity to find something they can enjoy. When you think of what track is you usually think that it only includes running. That is not the case because there is a wide variety of field events to explore as well. Every athlete on the team can decide to try jumping over the hurdles or soaring over the high jump bar. They are also able to see if throwing the shot put or discus is right for them. Maybe you enjoy sprinting or running the mile, all events are encouraged for the team! Joining the winter track team has been a place where our girls have really come together as a collective group of strong athletes. Every member adds to the strength of the team as a whole.”
The upcoming meets for the track team are very exciting with the opportunity to go to The Armory Hispanic Games at the Armory in New York City and the University of Yale. This season has been and will continue to be exhilarating. The journey for these girls on the track team is bright! Wishing them all the best at upcoming meets, the County Championship and State Qualifier Meet. Before you know it, they will be preparing for the spring track season.
