On November 15, 2024, Mepham’s Skull and Bones Drama Club had their annual fall play: “Middletown.” “Middletown” is a play written by Will Eno that describes the struggles and joys of life as different characters experience various perspectives on the world around them. The play focuses on two middle aged people living in a town called Middletown. Ms. Swanson, who was played by Junior Claire Arnoff, is a new addition to the town and is wanting to start a family. She meets a man named John Dodge, played by Sophomore Damian Hamilton, who is characterized as a regular of the town of Middletown. One of the other roles in the play includes a librarian, played by Senior AJ Lix, who has her own thoughts about this play: “‘Middletown’ is a play that will go right over your head if you’re not looking out for the beautiful intricacies. It is filled with foreshadowing and profound life lessons that have resonated deeply with both the cast and myself.”
“Middletown” is a great representation of the average small town: all having their unique people with a different story. “It was a deeply rewarding journey, made possible by my fellow cast members and the exceptional crew. I always love watching the words of a script slowly build into the words we create on stage,” according to Hamilton.
“Middletown” deals with some serious subjects, such as death and depression. Through the play, you can see the ways different characters adapt and change to these occurrences. There are also other characters that develop themselves as the audience has the chance to get to know them more. It was an incredible experience for the actors as well. Senior Alex Contrera who played the mechanic explains that “Middletown was an amazing play to put on. It was a challenge as an actor, but also so meaningful. Everyone involved in the show worked so hard to make it the best it could be and were so kind and welcoming every step of the way.”
