New Year, New Me

New Year’s Resolution: a promise that you make to yourself to start doing something positive in the new year. Sounds easy when you put it that way, right? Many people brainstorm New Year’s resolutions at the end of December in order to start the new year off on a positive note. People are supposed to try and keep a goal that they think could improve them overall. But do people actually keep their resolutions all year long?

I for one feel that people try to make their resolutions, but don’t actually keep them for the whole year. People try really hard to set new resolutions that will make them a better person. For the first couple months of the year, resolutions are usually still being pursued. But as the year goes on, kids get caught up with school and extracurricular activities. Adults can also get caught up in the daily stresses of everyday life, so New Year’s Resolutions for everyone could get put on the backburner for a while. So how can people try and keep their resolutions for the whole year while trying to juggle school work and other tasks? The answer is actually the same reason why you created the resolutions to begin with. People want a chance to start fresh for the new year with a better attitude, and find a resolution that is important to them.

But why do resolutions have to start at the beginning of the year? I feel that any day of the year people can decide to start fresh; it doesn’t have to be at the beginning. I think that this could give everyone a new perspective on New Year’s Resolutions. This could give people an initiative to make resolutions anytime and anywhere. I believe that people should make a resolution anytime they feel they want to make a positive change in themselves. This change in when someone makes a resolution can dictate whether or not they can keep it. Making a resolution any time of the year actually allows for someone to remember their resolutions because it was not set from the beginning of the year.

Maybe we should change the definition of a New Year’s Resolution. Maybe it should be a promise that you make to yourself to continue to do something positive anytime in the new year. I encourage people to continue to make resolutions all year long and remember the ones that are the most important to you. What will your next resolution be?
