On December 13, 2023, the chorus groups here at Mepham performed at their winter concert! Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors of various voice types celebrated the holiday season by gracing the stage with their talent and high spirits. Ms. Shapiro and Ms. Dimitriou are Mepham’s two chorus teachers, and Mixed Chorus, Concert Choir, and MephAcapella are the three choir groups students have the opportunity to take part in.
Mixed Chorus, the ensemble made up of mostly 9th grade students, sang “Dancing Queen” and the Elf theme song. There was a special appearance of kazoos in the middle of the Elf theme song performance, which was a big hit in the auditorium!
The Advanced Choir at Mepham, Concert Choir, is made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. One of the songs the Concert Choir sang was “Secret for the Mad”, which has a deep meaning behind it. Dodie wrote this song about her friend who was going through a rough time. The song was meant to spread a positive message to the audience, emphasizing that if you are going through a tough time, you will get through it. The Concert Choir also sang “Somebody to Love” and “Galop.” “Galop” was an interesting song because it was composed entirely of solfege syllables, Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do, typically used to indicate music pitch. Singing this piece shocked the audience and showed off the choir’s ability to sing on solfege.
MephAcapella is the final group that performed on the 13th. Students in MephAcapella are extremely passionate about singing and had to try out to sing with the group. They meet weekly, where they learn the music behind the songs they sing, allowing them to sing acapella. MephAcapella captivated the winter concert audience, singing both “Without You, Without Them” and “I Want It That Way.”
