With spring training just around the corner, tons of big league moves have occurred. There have been lots of trades, many shocking free agent signings, and lots of overall news that has shaken up the offseason. Before talking about the local sports in regards to the Mets and Yankees, the rest of the league had a lot of action and shakeup.

Going back to the very beginning of the offseason, Paul Goldschmidt was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, Patrick Corbin signed a big 6-year contract what’s the Washington Nationals, and slugger Josh Donaldson signed a deal with the Atlanta Braves, two seasons removed from his MVP season. That’s a lot of shakeup in the National League and this all happened in a matter of days. In the American League, the Seattle Mariners traded just about everybody and got some intriguing talent in return. Also, the Astros signed Michael Brantley, the Twins signed Nelson Cruz, the Rays nabbed Charlie Morton, and the Angels bulked their pitching staff with Matt Harvey and Trevor Cahill. Of course other deals have happened in both leagues with big free agents Yusei Kikuchi, Daniel Murphy, Nathan Eovaldi, Andrew Miller, Cody Allen, A.J. Pollock and David Robertson getting contracts as well. The two local teams though, the Mets and Yankees, have both made huge splashes in this offseason.

First up to bat is the Yankees. They wasted no time in trading for Seattle ace James Paxton. Just because their pitching was not already steller, they also resigned C.C. Sabathia, J.A. Happ, and Zach Britton. That’s a lot of letters. In the field, they signed Troy Tulowitzki to a league minimum contract which is a bargain considering the numbers that he can put on the statsheet,as well as another former Rockie in D.J. LeMahieu. There is also still the possibility that the Bronx Bombers could get either Bryce Harper or Manny Machado who are the most sought after free agents this offseason. That’s a lot of improvements for a team that won 100 games just a season ago.

Now to Flushing where the Mets started the offseason with bringing in a new general manager in Brodie Van Wagenen. He made a huge splash in trading for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz right off the bat, or the pitch depending on which piece you’re talking about. They also brought back reliever Jeurys Familia, who the Mets had traded to Oakland at the Trade Deadline last season, and just recently signed Justin Wilson to a contract as well. The catching position was also a need, promoting the Mets to sign Wilson Ramos to a 2-year deal, which allowed them to trade Kevin Plawecki to Cleveland. That trade was one of three that had just been made; the others brought J.D. Davis and Keon Broxton back to the Mets.

The offseason has yet to be finished with lots of moves still to be made. Both the Mets and Yankees have also made lots of moves but don’t expect them to be finished either. The offseason is still young.
