The Girls Varsity Tennis team, with their 8-0 consecutive wins, is one of the only high schools that is undefeated, with the girls ready to keep winning. However, many people are unaware of the girls’ tennis season. So, let’s dive into the details of the girls’ varsity tennis team as they continue their winning streak.
Most people do not watch tennis because it is a very complicated sport. Let me explain it quickly to you before talking about the team itself. Tennis is a very long game, which is split up into points, sets, and matches. First, points are scored every time one side gets a point. The points go up in an odd way. After you score a point, that one point is worth 15. The next is 30, and after that, you get to 40. Once you’re at 40, you only have to win one more point to finish a whole set. But wait, there’s more! You need to win 6 sets to finish a whole game. If you’re 5-6, however, you need to win by 2 points or play a tiebreaker once you both reach 7, which is a whole other story by itself, which I won’t get into today. You may be wondering, why did they make tennis such a difficult sport to understand? Well, the answers are not nice ones. Rich people wanted to keep tennis to themselves, so they made the sport hard on purpose so that poor people who didn’t have an education wouldn’t understand and give up the sport. Cruel, right? The girls on Varsity tennis didn’t let this stop them, though.
The team displays great dedication to the sport, showing up to practice every day, which usually takes place right after school from 2:15 to 4:15. The girls even practice on Sundays, where they rise at 8:00 am to come to the courts to practice tennis. Their home games usually start at 3:00 to 4:20, as some of the rival tennis teams come late. Don’t forget to cheer these girls on the courts!
The coach of the team, physical education teacher Mr. Koester, explains why he has the girls come out for practice so early and frequently. “I believe in practicing frequently because I really believe that we can move up to the higher division,” he says. “I want the girls to get up closer to the net and play aggressively, but I also hope they have fun at practices so they are passionate about playing tennis.”
The girls also share their opinions on the amount of practice. “I believe we need more practice. We have too many matches and not enough practices!” Sophomore Emma Jaskowiak said passionately. “I feel like we’re having a great season overall,” Senior Jillian Hochman added, “Personally, I didn’t like practicing at the beginning of the season. However, as it comes to an end, I wish we had more practice. It seems that the girls really do enjoy playing tennis and practicing, which is probably why they are doing so well in their division!” Great job, girls!
