Spotted lanternflies

Have you heard of the species invading the world? You have definitely seen them around at some point. These invasive species are called spotted lanternflies, which originate from China. They are about one inch long and wide, depending on their phase of life, and have large wings that have red with black spots.  These flies have traveled their way from Asia to North America through shipments. Their preferred host are the tree-of-heaven, but they could also be found on fruit trees, on the ground, or even in bodies of water.  These invasive flies are extremely harmful to plants and agriculture, and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets advises anyone who sees a lantern fly to “…kill it immediately by stepping on it or crushing it.”  So the next time you see one of these so called “innocent” insects, make sure you think twice before saving it.
