This fall marks Bellmore-Merrick’s 11th annual Flag Field of Honor, which has been our district’s ongoing tradition to pay tribute to our first responders. Superintendent Mr. Harrington founded the flag field of honor in 2016, as the district he lived in had one; together Ms. Dennis and Mr. Patten work to keep this tradition alive at Mepham as they oversee our yearly event to commemorate our heroes. They also helped me to get an insight into all the work that goes into making this event so special.
The Flag Field of Honor is our district’s way of giving back to the community through honoring its heroes. When asked its purpose, Ms. Dennis said it’s “to pay tribute to our service men and women and to those who have served and lost their lives in various military battles, for the U.S., and for 9/11 victims and first responders.” Through the senior service learning program, students, staff, and the community can buy a flag to honor a loved one, or the many servicepeople within their community.
This year all proceeds will go toward the Ronald McDonald House, known for their over 50 years of helping families. They have helped more than 1,000 families this year alone, and hopefully with the help of our Mepham family we can add to that number. Over the years, Mepham has raised around $816,000 for various charities and we hope to continue to raise money to help those in need. Our efforts have not gone unnoticed, as many first responders have reached out to give their thanks and appreciation for our yearly commemoration.
Students have also relayed their positive feedback for our event. Junior Caitlin Callahan says, “The field is a reminder of our responsibility to create a better future for everyone through honoring our community’s heros.” Purchasing a flag is a great way to be part of this tradition and to be involved in the Bellmore-Merrick community. Anyone can purchase a flag for $20 or 3 for $50 each fall which will be displayed from early November through December.
