The Mepham Concert and Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ms. Friedmann and Ms. Kenyon, concluded their winter concert after three months of worthwhile practice including sightreading, rhythm practice, and much dedicated effort. The two successful performances featured a total of eight songs, with three incorporating special elements.
The concert began as the audience entered the auditorium. The Mepham Chamber Orchestra, a select group of students, played various holiday songs, such as “Feliz Navidad,” “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” and other holiday hits. Chamber Orchestra is performed without a conductor, challenging the musicians to work together.
The Mepham Concert Orchestra, composed of freshman musicians, played four pieces led and conducted by Ms. Friedmann: “Polar Vortex,” “The Waltz from Sleeping Beauty” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” Furthermore, a smaller group of nine students put together “No Rest for the Merry” as a chamber group.
The Mepham Symphony Orchestra, consisting of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, led and conducted by Ms. Kenyon also played four pieces: “Music from Frozen,” “For the Star of County Down,” “A Mad Russian’s Christmas” and “Last Christmas.” “A Mad Russian’s Christmas” and “Last Christmas” were accompanied by drummer Gavin Steele. “Music from Frozen” featured a solo by violinist Aidan Cheung, first chair of the first violin section. Aidan shared, “Having the opportunity to play the solo was a great honor. I can honestly say I’m proud of myself and of the whole Mepham Symphony Orchestra for what we’ve accomplished.”
Both orchestra performances reflected the hard work and improvement the students have made during the first semester. Congratulations to the Mepham orchestras!
