The LEO Club has recently participated in its largest event of the year, the Polar Express. The Polar Express is a community service event run by the Bellmore Lions Club that donates thousands of toys, clothing, items, and hygiene products to families in need. The LEO Members had the opportunity to help distribute presents, paint faces, and guide families through the bustling halls of Brookside Educational Center.
LEO students volunteered to help set up the event or assist families during the distribution. On the setup day, students decorated cupcakes and assisted various organizations in setting up their donation stations. The following day, students handed out cupcakes, books, clothes, jackets, and other items to the families who attended. The overall atmosphere of the event was uplifting, as community members came together to work towards a shared goal. The event concluded with a visit from Santa Claus, where children had the opportunity to pick a gift from the generously filled auditorium.
“It was a fulfilling experience because we had the opportunity to set up for an annual tradition that matters to many families on Long Island,” said sophomore Reina Lin, a participating student and LEO Club treasurer.
The Polar Express helps dozens of local families each year, providing essential items during the holiday season to support communities across Long Island. The LEO Club will continue to partner with the Lions Club throughout the school year and in future Polar Express events. Mrs. Partap, the LEO Club advisor, says that “it truly warms my heart to see the Mepham kids take such pride in volunteering their time. Great job, LEO Club!
