Alumni Day, a Mepham tradition

It is finally that anticipated time of the year, where our Mepham seniors start to receive their college decisions and make their own. When experiencing college tours and sessions, professors and administrators primarily talk to incoming students. But, hearing from current college students provides a unique point of view to insight into college life. An annual event that takes place every year is alumni day at Mepham is Alumni day. A day where the previous graduating class comes back to talk to Mepham seniors about their experiences in college.

Ms. Einbinder, Social Studies chairperson and event coordinator explains, “It’s important for the current seniors to hear from recent graduates because the current seniors will be able to hear first-hand from peers who are just a few months ahead of them. They can hear about what academics will be like in college and what the social life will be like in college.”

The seniors had the opportunity to hear different perspectives on what the application process is and explain how it may look different for every student. They will also have the opportunity to hear from alumni that might be going to the school that they are interested in.

Mepham Senior Tyler Steinberg who attended the event stated that, “Alumni Day was extremely helpful for seniors who are ready to take that next step into college life with freshman from all different colleges discussing the differences in classes, dorming, and more to help give more knowledge to be the unknown to high school seniors.” Heading into the real world for college might seem scary but hearing from all of these students may put those nerves at ease and give them things to look forward to in the future.

There is also the opportunity to ask questions about what they are enjoying and may have done differently and give advice on the college experience. One thing a lot of the alumni had mentioned was the dorming experience. Being that it was one of the nerves of going to college, the topic was put at ease when having to think about dorms.

Getting to hear from alumni who were just students not that long ago was such a cool experience, especially hearing about the different classes, clubs, and dining options.
