In the 30s and 40s, there was a section of the school newspaper where students were asked an opinion question. Starting last year, I have taken that idea and used the old questions for the new part of “The Buccaneer,” “Students Speak.” This question was asked of the Mepham students in 1948 and again in 2023.
If you had your choice, who would you be? Why? (2023 answers)
Maddy Hunter: I would like to be Katie Grimes because she’s a really good swimmer.
Isabelle Crocenzi: I would like to be a famous role model because I would want to be able to encourage people’s lives. I would like people to look up to me in life especially when they are struggling.
Kylie McElwee: I would like to be David Bowie as he seems to have lived a cool life. Even if he is dead now, I still would want to be him to just experience what he lived.
Emilio Pena: I would like to be Travis Kelce because he is a great football player and tight end.
Michael Delia: I want to be a baseball player for the New York Mets so I can become famous, make friends, meet some of my idols, and make cash.
Maddie Lesser: I would be Tate McRae. I think she is such a talented person and she is very successful in the music industry. She is a really nice person and cares about her fans.
Mya Passanisi: I would love to be Taylor Swift because she is gorgeous and I love her music.
Calista Chen: I would want to be a billionaire who doesn’t actually have a job, or only has to work a couple days a month. It would be so cool to just sit in my gigantic house all day or go around my go-kart track. If I was a billionaire I could buy anything.
Oliver Mattes: I would be a famous zoologist. I love animals and I plan on being a zoologist in the future. It would be cool if I was very successful and well known for how great I was with animals.
Answers from 1948:
Dick Rapp: A noted architect and build the eighth wonder of the world.
Bill Kane: Anybody who has a vacation. I just feel like going swimming–anywhere.
Drucilla Munnich: A noted fashion designer because I could design gowns for women so they would look the way I’d like them to look.
Mary Dittmer: A bass in a barber shop quartet. I’ve always wished I could sing that very low harmony of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.”
Harry Garing: Andy Varipapra. He can bowl 300 and I can’t bowl 250.
James Rosecrans: The bat boy on the New York Yankees team because I would see all their games.
Barbara Stein: (After much thought) Myself because I know me better than anyone else.
Ed Harney: Joe DiMaggio- with that much skill, I could make the freshman team.
